Marlboro Women (2024)
Marlboro Women is an ongoing series that acts as a decontextualization of the famous Marlboro Man ad campaign used to sell Marlboro Cigarettes from 1954 to 1999. While the campaign uses red to symbolize the iconic Marlboro red packaging, these photographs use the color to reference the unity and rebellion of women in the 20th century in the fight for women’s rights. Instead of being beholden to the brand, the cigarette is merely a prop in the woman’s narrative. The cigarette acts as a symbol of confidence, defiance, and respect. She takes possession of it, and covers it in red.
